DSA is an award winning practice. We work at scales from the smallest courtyard to extensive landscape planning. We are a leading exponent of sustainable drainage systems design and management. We believe in great design and look to strengthen the connection between people and their environment. It is unashamedly based in science, rooted in function and looks to art to engage people and create uniqueness.

DSA were involved at the outset with Leicestershire County Council and the Willmott Dixon design team, including A+G Architects and Arup. We introduced the idea that the whole school landscape should be usable for teaching and learning. In 2011 DSA beat competition from internationally renowned practices to develop the world' first 'sustainable plant masterplan' for Toyota at their car manufacturing plant at Burnaston in Derbyshire.

We brought forward a 'vision' to secure planning consent for this 47 hectare site, 26 of which is green space. DSA Environment & Design are delighted to be co-authors of Building for a Healthy Life (BHL).
Services
We aim to be at the very forefront of sustainable development so we work hard to understand what the client's problem really is, rather than simply delivering a standard 'solution'.
This enables us to focus on what really matters, to make sure it does the job.
We enjoy solving client problems and exploring what additional value can be brought to a place with thoughtful and effective landscape and urban design.
We explore the background and relish working with other designers, engineers, planners and ecologists to do this.
Building for a Healthy Life is the latest edition of - and new name for - Building for Life 12.
Building for a Healthy Life (BHL) updates England's most widely known and most widely used design tool for creating places that are better for people and nature.
The original 12-point structure and underlying principles within Building for Life 12 are at the heart of BHL.
The new name reflects changes in legislation, notably the Environment Bill, as well as refinements which we've made to the 12 considerations in response to good practice and user feedback.
We've always been determined to make sure that water is considered early on in the design process.
In particular we like to investigate the use of techniques like Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), Natural Flood Management (NFM) and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
These feature in most of our schemes, to ensure that opportunities are taken to extract the maximum value from water for people and wildlife.
We've therefore been involved in the promotion of this at CIRIA and in other forums!
David has delivered numerous talks to help people see how this might be done, using examples from UK and abroad.
DSA were involved at the outset with Leicestershire County Council and the Willmott Dixon design team, including A+G Architects and Arup.
We introduced the idea that the whole school landscape should be usable for teaching and learning.
The building location was adjusted to enable an almost totally 'above ground' SuDS/WSUD solution.
We drew up the Landscape Management Plan (LMP) to address planning conditions, BREEAM and to give students input into the way their external learning spaces are managed.

Working with Dr James Hitchmough and colleagues at Sheffield University, together with the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, we produced the 'vision' to secure funding and deliver an ongoing landscape transformation of the 235-hectare site.
The early phases of this decades-long project have now been completed, showing a measurable increase in biodiversity value, as well as tangible reductions in landscape management cost and pollutants, including herbicides and pesticides as well as carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.
