The Food, Art and Technology (FAT) Cultural Arts Centre is our response to the international competition to re-purpose a dis-used factory building in Bologna, Italy.
FAT is both a place of work and a tourist destination, where art and theatre co-exist with urban fruit and vegetable gardens and market stalls, all under one roof, serviced by the latest innovative technological thinking.
FAT grows in and out of the cracks and fissures caused by a theoretical earthquake as it takes a direct hit on the building.
Very rarely does a design remain unaltered throughout the process, but Mr. & Mrs. Cosgrove knew what they wanted and were very like-minded with our approach to design.
Indeed our initial sketch idea, presented at the very first meeting, was built.
The concept aimed to create a large open-plan kitchen / diner / sitting area with extensive full-width, full-height glazing to enjoy far-reaching views and a new, modern, flat-roofed, white-rendered pool-house at the bottom of the garden.
Tonbridge and Malling Council were very supportive of the design, even in an area of outstanding natural beauty, and the project was completed in Winter 2014.
The Nokia retail programme ran from 2005 until 2013, during which time a2d architecture were appointed as the Retail Master Design Agency for Europe and Eurasia.
A2d developed 5 major Nokia Retail Concepts : Flagship Stores, High Street Stores, Shop-in-Shop, Kiosk & Care Centres.
We created comprehensive guidelines for each concept and helped deliver over 250 projects in 25 countries, notably throughout Russia and China.
Projects ranged from the Flagship Store in Moscow, a High Street Store in Pendik, Istanbul, the Nokia Trade Fair Stand at the inaugural World Retail Congress in Barcelona and In-house Installations within Nokia Experience Centre at the Nokia World Headquarters, Helsinki.
Oculus is a semi-permanent, modular, free-standing, outdoor pavilion, designed to house additional exhibits in the river-side courtyard of The Lightbox Art Gallery, Woking, UK.
The portable, timber, multi-use structure simultaneously combines paintings & sculptures, an amphi-theatre with retractable seating, sun-shading and an upper viewing gallery.
Based on the anatomy of an eye, the sustainable concept explores how we look at objects by offering a range of different displays and viewpoints.
At its heart lies the viewer, gathering new experiences and processing new information.
