Jim Garland Architects
Formed in 2000, Jim Garland Architects has a track record of designing high quality innovative projects throughout the south of England. We are design led, believing that every commission is an opportunity for creative engagement with the project brief and context, an approach which adds value and delivers the optimum built solution for our clients.

Our expertise comes from over 25 years of designing, primarily within historic and sensitive environments, both in the U.K and abroad. Combining design flair with planning expertise, we relish the challenge of a demanding brief, and our success is recognised by awards won and referrals from existing clients.
Services
Firs Court is a residential home for 23 adults with mental health problems and/or learning disabilities who previously lived in 4 separate converted houses.
The new home comprises 2 wings and a central linking block which wrap around three sides of a central courtyard, providing a sunny sheltered oasis from the busy Hook Road.
The courtyard design incorporates a colonnade to either side which reduces solar gain to the ground floor curtain wall glazing and provides covered areas so that residents can enjoy the courtyard even in inclement weather.
A Grade 1 listed church dating back in part to 1190, St Mary's sits in a prominent position overlooking the village green in Chiddingfold, Surrey.
Although it had been considerably altered and extended over the past 800 years, the church lacked any spaces appropriate for more modern church activities, and children's/youth groups in particular.
An application for an extension was refused at public enquiry in 1985.
Jim Garland Architects was appointed in 2004 to explore whether an alternative solution might be feasible.
Listed Grade II, Rutland Gardens was constructed mid c19 as stables before its later conversion to residential use.
The interior was completely replanned in the 1960s, with a high quality geometric design completely at odds with existing fabric.
Our brief was to produce a period replacement sympathetic to the external shell.
The elliptical staircase is the key element in achieving these aims.
Its open plan relationship to the main living room makes the most of the available width and depth whilst its elliptical shape gives a flowing sculptural quality, inviting the eye upwards to the oculus above.
Parkland Court is a late 1950's five storey building located in Holland Park, London.
Following the success of Viewside Lodge, the Pirton Ltd was invited to tender for a vertical extension to the property, and Jim Garland Architects was appointed to undertake the feasibility study.
A number of issues stood out; fire escape was courtesy of a single communal staircase, external walls lacked any insulation, and the communal lift was at the end of its life and so small to be of limited value, particularly with regard to disabled access.
Viewside Lodge is a 3-storey apartment block situated in a prominent corner position within the Crouch End Conservation Area.
Built circa 1959 from light beige coloured concrete bricks and topped with an asphalt covered flat roof, it was of poor visual and constructional quality and detracted from the local streetscape.
The client brief was for a comprehensive package of refurbishment and improvements to the building as a whole including two additional flats on the existing roof space.
Our aim was to enhance the positive aspects of the existing building whilst overcoming its aesthetic and technical limitations.
