Roger Mears Architects believes that architecture is the key to enhancing our clients' experience of daily life. Our philosophy is to create beautifully crafted buildings that reflect our clients' styles and personalities, within an historic context. Our work is guided by SPAB principles, with a focus on conservation and sustainability -caring for traditional buildings using a modern approach.

Each project is unique with its own story of its journey through time. We help uncover each building's distinctive features, which determines careful and meticulous repair. Where required, we add to the narrative of the building by designing new features, additions and extensions derived from the original details, but in a 21st- century idiom. Each repair is honest in detail, and each addition is designed to ensure that the building is enjoyed by another new generation.

A selection of our work from our 35 year history is displayed in the Projects section, with some shown below. I am an Architect Accredited in Building Conservation (AABC), as well as accredited with the RIBA as a Specialist Conservation Architect.

There are certain events that change the course of one's life.
It is these events that we remember in detail and that continue to excite our minds, informing our thoughts and actions today.
It was during a journey to west Wales over 40 years ago when Roger and his wife discovered an abandoned watermill in a remote valley.
Covered in snow, it still had most of its original features and machinery in place but it needed to be repaired by careful hands.
They knew little about the area, nothing about mills and nothing about old buildings but they rose to the challenge, and after joining the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings they were introduced to the thrills and enchantments of old buildings.
While most projects are residential, ranging from substantial country houses to small London terrace houses and from sizeable extensions and alterations to minor repairs, the practice is also involved in conservation and repairs to churches within and outside London, to listed retail and office premises, schools, and arts, culture and entertainment buildings.
The majority of our projects involve listed properties including rescue and heritage at risk projects, but we also undertake new build projects and conversions.

I have worked at Roger Mears Architects (RMA) since 2007 and have been a Practice Partner since 2015.
RMA has a strong track record of working in Conservation, something I am deeply passionate about.
I qualified as an architect in 1979, and joined Roger Mears Architects in 2014 after 35 years continuous employment at Architects Co-Partnership (ACP) - as a practice director for the last 10 years.
Highly Commended: Hackney Council Design Awards 2020 - Heritage and restoration Category as a great example of the 'touch lightly' approach to historic building conservation.
Congratulations to our Sarah Khan for winning the IHBC Astley Student Awards 2019 with her work on 'The Gost in the Machine: Occupants' influence on the Environmental Performance in a Grade I listed Building.
Awarded with the Interior Design Award for the Herts Build Award 2019.
Thanks to Jo Eastham Interior Designer for working with us to bring back to life this beautiful Grade II listed building.
