Services
Based in York since 1922, Ferrey and Mennim have worked from Orkney to Cambridge providing the full scope of architectural services, ranging from intricate solutions for the repair and alteration of complex historic buildings to the design of major new buildings.
We are the cathedral architects for St Magnus' Cathedral and Hull Minster as well as caring for over 180 churches throughout York, Leeds, and Sheffield Dioceses, carrying out quinquennial inspections, repairs and new improvements.
We are fortunate in having worked with exceptional clients and craftsmen from across Yorkshire and the North of England to create and restore buildings with carefully crafted, modern detail.
Ferrey and Mennim work on the conservation of churches but also on their continuing sensitive adaptation and updating.
At All Saints Church, Northallerton we are working with the church community to undertake a series of projects to adapt the 900 year old church for modern use and make its environment more comfortable for its users.
Having inserted a new kitchen that has enabled the wide north aisle to perform a range of community functions such as a popular baby and toddler group, we have recently completed a major re-lighting scheme.
Our work in close collaboration with the vicar and PCC at All Saints Church, Brough has produced a warm and welcoming church that well suits the character of its congregation.
The project was broken into two manageable phases with Phase 1 providing a new underfloor heating system throughout the nave and radiators beneath the windows.
This phase also involved replacing the floor with large format porcelain tiles whose colour gradually lightens towards the altar, redecorating the church and reopening the Victorian entrance.
Ferrey and Mennim's experience and specialism in historic bridge repair led to us being appointed to repair the Kexby Old Bridge.
This grade II* listed bridge was built in 1650 and until the 1970s carried the main road from York to Hull on its three large, rounded, triple-chamfered stone arches.
The frequent flooding of the River Derwent had slowly led to the deterioration of the bridge.
This included the scouring of the abutments and piers and extensive damage and loss of stones on the upstream side of the underside of the arches.
Ferrey and Mennim are fortunate to have a long term relationship with many of our clients, and since 1999 have worked with Hull Minster as their quinquennial architect and carrying out their fabric repairs.
Built around 1285, for over 700 years Hull Minster has been the vibrant, city centre, heart of Hull.
It is one of the England's finest, early examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture and is now Grade I listed.
Being constructed under the royal patronage of Edward I it is a remarkably unified church from its era.
